The kids and I are about halfway through reading the book Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell. This was one of my favorite books when I was a kid and I wanted to share it with my kids. While they are all pretty much old enough to read it themselves, I enjoy hearing the story again after a few decades have passed when I read it in 3rd grade. It is a Newberry Award winner and still holds up after all these years. It was first written in the 1950’s I think and the author died about a year after I read it for the first time in the late 1980’s. It is about a Twelve year old girl, about the same age as my oldest child, who gets left behind alone in an island after a series of tragedies. My kids are definitely intrigued by the story, which can be a little difficult to do these days with all the competition from electronics and social media. Next, I hope to reread the book Hatchet by Gary Paulson. It was another one of my childhood favorites. I must have really liked stories of survival as a kid!
